CIO50 2019: #26-50 Garrick Ang, Generika Drugstore (AC Health)
Under the leadership of Garrick Ang as Chief Information Officer, the IT department implemented a digital transformation strategy Generika, a leading pharmaceutical-retail specialist in the Philippines.
With the aim of offering high-quality and affordable generic medicines for Filipinos, the project impacted more than 1000 drugstores and clinics nationwide, spearheaded by a migration of legacy ERP systems to SAP.
Setting aside manual processes, the organisation deployed a cloud-based digital channel platform housing a data orchestration layer and open API gateway with the aim of providing connected healthcare services for customers.
The project has increased Generika’s capacity to meet operations demands from within the company, directly improving processes in distribution centres and warehouses.
The digitalisation efforts also focused on connecting with “hard to reach” community locations, as well as creating digital products such as MEDPadala, an electronic gift certificate used by individuals to send money to family and relatives to purchase medicine, whether for maintenance or emergency.
Despite facing many challenges specific to server, network infrastructure and connectivity, a move to the cloud helped overcome such barriers through a series of pilot projects.
Trial deployments spanned data science, big data and democratised artificial intelligence, alongside augmented reality, tele-health, the Internet of Things and wearables.
To ensure success from the outset, Ang and his department sought boardroom buy-in to drive a cultural shift within the organisation, evident through a ‘technology and change as one’ approach.
